Deb Knight urges Influencers to stop "glorifying tanning"

Deborah Knight, 51, has spoken out against influencers who glorify tanning as she shared the results from her annual skin check.

The TV and radio presenter, shared a series of photos showing the sun damage on her skin, as she reminded her followers to stay sun safe and get their skin checked.

"Got off pretty lightly from my annual skin check. Just a few barnacles zapped but nothing serious this time round," she began in the caption.

"Timely reminder to get your skin checked and protect it from the sun in the first place," she added, before tagging two melanoma treatment specialists and the Melanoma Institute Australia.

She signed off the post with the hashtag #stopglorifyingtanning.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; New theory in Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness split

News of Hugh Jackman and Deborah-Lee Furness’ split after 27 years of marriage shocked the world, and now celebrity experts are sharing their theories.

US broadcaster Cooper Lawrence shared her theory in an interview with Sunrise hosts Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington on Monday morning.

Lawrence claimed that the couple were waiting for their two adopted children Oscar, 23, and Ava, 18, to grow old enough before they had an amicable split.

“I think [Jackman and Furness] were waiting until the kids were old enough that they could have an amicable split and not worry about child custody or how much everybody is going to pay each other,” she told the Sunrise hosts.

She added that child custody battles are what make high-profile divorces “messy”, which could explain the timing of the divorce.

“They don’t have to worry about that because the kids are older, so now they can just split their multi-millions and all their properties, which is a lot.”

The couple have properties in New York, Sydney and The Hamptons.

Lawrence added that the rumour mill began spinning on “the Broadway scene” sometime last year after the couple sold their three-storey New York apartment.

“For a while on the Broadway scene there was a rumour there might be something going on in that marriage and people were like, ‘This is kind of odd,’ but as soon as they sold their three-floor apartment... and downsized and then shipped a bunch of furniture home to Sydney, it was like ‘What’s really going on here?’” she said.

She added that while celebrity splits are nothing new, some fans have taken it harder than others because some celebrities make them believe in true love.

“Every time there was a think piece about Hollywood couples that made us believe in love, (Jackman and Furness) were always at the top of the list,” Lawrence explained.

“They are always talking about each other and they were the ‘it couple’ for anybody that’s a little older than their younger spouse.

“They were role models for everything in relationships.”

Fans aren't the only ones devastated by the divorce. The Wolverine actor broke his silence the day after their separation statement went public, and shared that it was "a difficult time.'

Image: Getty/Kevin Mazur/WireImage

"We've come so far": Deb Knight pens moving letter to daughters

Presenter Deborah Knight has written a touching letter to her children to celebrate International Women’s Day.

In the letters - one to her daughters, and one to her son - Deb honours them as well as all of the other women, girls, and gender diverse individuals to have come before them, and highlights that although society has come a long way in many regards, we still have a long way to go in many, many others.

“To my Dear Daughters,” Deb began, in the letter shared to 9News. “Happy International Women's Day! It's great being a girl, and there's so much to celebrate.

“We've come so far from the days when girls weren't allowed to do so much. We couldn't have a job, or own our own things. We weren't allowed to vote at elections, or go to school, and a lot of this was not that long ago, and for no good reason.

“Girls and women were just as able to reach their full potential as you are today - they just weren't given the chance.

“Now, there are so many more opportunities for girls. If you work hard and put your mind to it, you can achieve so much in your life and career. You can even be a champion in sports that once only boys were allowed to play. But unfortunately there is still a way to go before you are judged only on what you are able to do, rather than whether you're a boy or a girl.

“Your brother will still earn more money than you for the same job. He'll do less work around the house, and retire on more superannuation. He'll be more likely to be your boss or the Prime Minister.

“You'll be at much greater risk of being a victim of domestic violence or sexual assault, and if you do become a professional sports star, you'll earn a fraction of what your brother would, and most likely have to fit another job around your training to pay the bills.”

Deb went on to write about how there was still much to celebrate - though she wouldn’t touch on the beliefs she held when she was their age.

She stressed that for her girls, there would be a difficult road ahead should they choose to have children and a career, likely drawing from her own experiences when she wrote “you’ll feel like you’re failing at one or both jobs - letting down your boss and your family at certain points. You'll feel guilty, and be made to feel guilty for the choices you make.

“The harsh truth is you can't easily have it all, maybe not all at once. But I really hope you try.”

To her son, Deb wrote of her hope that one day “boys and girls will be truly equal.”

“Your Dad does so much more in raising you and your sisters than Grandad or Great Grandad ever did,” she reflected, “and I know you will likely do more than all of them if you have your own family one day. Although you need to get better at hanging up your towel after you have a shower…”

And in comments reflecting what she’d told her daughters, Deb urged her son to do the right thing, and use his privilege to help whenever he could, “the girls can fight as hard as they like to get the same opportunities as you, but they'll never really achieve it without boys like you stepping up as well.

“You need to make sure you show them respect, and call out boys and men you see treating girls and women badly, either with their words or their actions.”

Deb concluded by telling him that it would be better for everyone to have people of all genders treated equally, and how it would “make life so much easier for everyone.

“So I hope you recognise the importance of International Women's Day, not just for your sisters, but for families everywhere.”

Images: Instagram

"Find a life worth enjoying": Dame Deborah's final letter to her family

Dame Deborah James wrote a heartwarming letter to her family in her final days before succumbing to bowel cancer at the age of 40.

The popular British media personality, mother-of-two and podcaster who raised millions of dollars for charity passed away “peacefully” on June 28.

In a section of a book titled How To Live When You Could Be Dead, Dame Deborah penned the final letter which her family would be left with.

“I am currently sitting here next to the love of my life, Sebastien,” the letter began.

“I never quite knew if you could really have a love of your life, but I now know what the very core of unquestioned love is between two people.

“I have always loved my husband. I fancied him from when I first met him, and I knew I would marry him after our third date. It was clear to me that, while he wasn’t perfect, there was something about him that was right for me.”

She then reflected on their time together and said it was so important to take time for the marriage and how sometimes you forget your loved one is there when life gets busy.

“It’s easy to forget that the person you love is still there in front of you when things are clouded by the annoyance of childcare logistics, money pressures and living like ships in the night,” her letter continued.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; He was lying next to me in our double bed in our flat, and he was looking for my breast to feed on — he was yellow and had a big conehead.

“I remember looking at this little 6lb ball cradled against my tummy and thinking that it was only at this point that I had begun to understand what love was.

“I now look at that same 14-year-old boy, who still takes the time to cuddle up next to me on the sofa, and I would give anything to continue being able to protect him in the way I did when he was just four days old.”

Dame Deborah then ended with a reminder, telling readers that it is okay to relax and take time for yourself.

“Take time out. Relaxing isn’t an indulgence — it’s a form of refilling ourselves. None of us can drink from empty cups.

“Each day, do things that make you happy — build them into your life and never criticise others for the things that make them happy.

“Every day we wake not knowing if we will see the full 24 hours of the day, so as the sun comes up on a new day, we should feel blessed.

“We are given 86,400 seconds every day, and we each choose how to use them.

“It is only as they begin to slip away from us that we understand the value of each and every one of those seconds.”

You can read the entire letter from Dame Deborah James from How To Live When You Could Be Dead, by Deborah James out on August 18, 2022.

Images: Instagram

Here's to you x".

The family announced Deborah's death on June 29th, saying she "passed away peacefully" at home where she has been receiving hospice care.

Deborah James sees the rose named after her

Podcast host Deborah James’ visit to the annual Chelsea Flower Show was made particularly special when she was able to see a rose that has been named after her.

James visited the show on Tuesday with her husband, where the couple were taken on an hour-long private tour and posed for photos alongside her namesake flower.

“Flowers are a reminder of our future,” James said, per the BBC. “We plant the seed not knowing what we might see grow.

“Being around nature gives us a lift and it is a reminder that life continues to blossom, even in some of the hardest places, and brings a smile to all of our faces, even in the hardest of times - particularly mine.”

James also shared the news with her fans on social media several days before her visit to Chelsea, admitting that she “actually cried” when Word of Roses and the Harkness Rose Company, which bred the rose, asked if they could name the flower after her.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Deborah Knight’s big avocado haul

Deborah Knight has come into a “goldmine” of avocadoes – and shared some kitchen tips for fellow fans of the fruit.

Earlier this week, the TV and radio presenter revealed her “backyard harvest” on Instagram with a picture of a basket full of avocadoes.

View this post on Instagram

Backyard harvest. #avocado

A post shared by Deborah Knight (@deborah_knight) on Feb 29, 2020 at 8:30pm PST

Speaking on her 2GB show Afternoons with Deborah Knight, she said her family had pulled out more than 20 avocadoes from the tree in the backyard of their Sydney house.

“I hit the jackpot over the weekend, I’m sitting on a goldmine at my place,” Knight said.

“And now we’ve got all of these avocadoes. We shared them with the neighbours, but we’re wondering what we can do with the surplus of avocadoes.”

She said the avocadoes were not ripe yet and asked 9Honey kitchen editor Jane de Graaff for tips on handling the fruit.

“Pop them in a paper bag with a banana – the natural gases that the banana releases will help the avocadoes ripen as well,” de Graaff said. “Or just put them in a paperbag by themselves and just leave them on the bench, they will ripen in a couple of days.”

If the avocado is still too hard or sticking onto the skin, de Graaff advised using a peeler to peel off the skin and create ribbons of avocado for a salad.

Knight continued, “Apart from guacamole, when they do ripen, what else can I be making out of these?”

De Graaff recommended smashing the avocado to put on toast or using it as a base for chocolate mousse.

“You can actually make a vegan mousse just by pureeing up an avocado, some cocoa powder, bit of honey, bit of mint if you want it in there,” she said. “Puree it all up, pop it in a glass, put it in the fridge, and you’ve got a healthy, vegan chocolate mousse.”

If the avocadoes get too ripe or soft, de Graaff offered another tip. “Put it in your pesto,” she said. “You can leave the cheese out. You don’t have to be a vegan to do this … put some avocado, blitz it up with your pine nuts and some basil leaves, and that makes the most incredible, creamy, creamy pesto.”

Deborah Hutton shines at 57: Here’s how you can keep vibrant skin too

Deborah Hutton has proven that she is still shining and glowing at 57.

The former editor of Women’s Weekly has even divulged her fanciful secret that helps keep her skin in check without all the fancy facials and pricey products - and it is a milk thistle.

“I take milk thistle, because I love my wine!” Deborah wrote in a re-surfaced post on her website, Balance by Deborah Hutton.

“A naturopath told me recently that this magic flower (also known as St Mary's Thistle) is brilliant for supporting the regeneration of liver cells.”

The product is renowned for working wonders on a hangover, when you might have lacklustre and dull skin.

When it comes to her skincare, Deborah said she has learned throughout the years that staying with the same routine religiously has been the key to keeping the vitality and youthfulness of her skin.

“Stick to a daily skincare regime - cleanse, hydrate and protect,” she said.

Deborah added that a daily broad spectrum sunscreen to protect her from the harmful UVA and UVB rays is also thrown into her daily regime, as well as regular exfoliating.

The 57-year-old magazine cover model said with skincare, everything starts from within so what you’re eating and drinking has a major impact.

Hutton noted she drinks between 1.5 and two litres of water each day, while avoiding fatty foods and sugar where possible.

“I’m far from perfect and love my indulgences, but I generally have a fairly healthy diet - chicken, fish, salads etc - and steer clear of deep-fried food, soft drinks and too many sweets,” she explained.

Deborah supplements her daily diet with magnesium, Vitamin C, Omega 3, Vitamin B, Anthogenol and Silica.

“I’m a hopeless sleeper. I have to turn all the gadgets off, the phone off and the TV off, at least an hour before I go to bed,” she said to the Sunday Telegraph.

“Camomile tea is a thing that I do every night, and I use a sleeping mask, I take melatonin - a natural hormone - which helps, but I really am a dreadful sleeper.”

The only upside to this, she said, is that she's regularly up by 5am, when she catches up on her meditation.

Deborah typically goes to the gym twice a week, and includes regular cardio and daily walks.

Scroll through the gallery to see Deborah Hutton's glowing skin.

5 minutes with author Deborah Rodriguez

In 5 minutes with author, Over60 asks book writers about their literary habits and preferences. Next in this series is Deborah Rodriguez, a writer, hairdresser and business owner based in Mazatlán, Mexico. She has written two fiction bestsellers – The Little Coffee Shop of Kabul and Return to the Little Coffee Shop of Kabul – as well as two memoirs about her life in Afghanistan and America. Her latest novel, Island on the Edge of the World, is out now.

Over60 talked with Rodriguez about her life as a grandmother and spa owner, her unconventional writing routine, and the reads she recommends.

Over60: What is your best writing tip?

Rodriguez: Just write. Write from your heart. Don’t pay attention to spelling or punctuation, just get lost in your stories. Practice getting them out of your head, letting them flow down to your fingers and onto the keyboard. Don’t put it off. Tell your story, and tell it proudly.

I struggled in school with spelling and punctuation. I still battle with it, and am very thankful for spell check and punctuation apps. When I was in school, I had a teacher discourage me from taking a writing class. I had many stories and I wrote all the time, recapping my days in a journal. But this teacher thought I would be better suited for art than for writing. I loved art and still do, but it was a shame that I had that choice made for me. I almost let that teacher take away my storytelling. I wish he had said, “Creative writing would be excellent for someone like you, who seems to have a lot to say.”

What book do you think more people should read?

That’s a tricky question. Any of my books, of course! But seriously, to me, it’s books that open our eyes and our hearts to other cultures that I feel are always “should-reads”. It’s hard for me to pick just one book, but I can share with you a couple of my favourites. What I am enjoying right now is In Arabian Nights: A Caravan of Moroccan Dreams by Tahir Shah. I’m really enjoying these stories about past and present Morocco. One of my favourite books is The Hummingbird’s Daughter by Luis Alberto Urrea. I could read this book over and over. It’s a mystical drama of a young woman’s sudden sainthood in late 19th century Mexico. I live in Mexico, near the area where the book takes place, and the book just captured me from beginning to end.

How have the places you travelled to influenced your writing?

The places I’ve travelled and the cultures I’ve experienced have greatly affected all my books. There is not one moment when I am travelling that I am not weaving stories in my head. I have never vacationed well, because I’m always trying to peek behind the curtains.

What was the last book that made you cry?

I am working on my next book, which takes place in Morocco, so I’m reading all things Moroccan. I recently picked up a book that I first read 18 years ago, Stolen Lives: Twenty Years in a Desert Jail by Malika Oufkir. I was horrified at this true story of imprisonment and escape. It is impossible to read this book and not weep.

Do you have a writing routine? If so, what does it look like?

My life is a little crazy, as I still run a small spa in Mexico, not to mention my duties as a mother and grandmother. So I write whenever I can find the time. What may be somewhat unique about my process is the development stage. I start with a thought, I choose an appropriate (and interesting) location, and then I travel. I talk to everyone I meet along the way, and keep my ears open to everything. If I’m lucky, I come home with a novel in my head!

Who is your favourite literary character, if any?

One of my favourite literary characters is Liesel from The Book Thief. Of course I admired her resilience and bravery, but mostly I identified with her desire to keep books close to her. Even when she was still illiterate, she could feel their power and the need to protect them. She’s literally a “literary” hero.

Which author, deceased or living, would you most like to have dinner with?

I would like to have dinner with J.K. Rowling. It’s not hard to be impressed with this woman, but I have a new level of respect for her now. During the writing of Island on the Edge of the World, which deals with the issues surrounding the orphanages of Haiti, I learned that Rowling is the founder and president of the international non-profit organization Lumos, which works to end the institutionalisation of children globally, and ensure that all children grow up in a safe and caring environment. I would love to have dinner with her to thank her for taking on such a massive job of promoting family preservation.

What trope grinds your gears? Alternatively, is there a cliché that you can’t help but love?

One trope that really irritates me with that the bad guy always wears black. I am a hairdresser and hairdressers always wear black.

I live in Mexico, where there are a lot of Canadians who spend winter in my town. The first time I heard the saying “I’m off like a dirty shirt”, I thought, “What?” It means you are finished with something, and leaving quickly. I now try to use it whenever I can.

“It’s a pretty simple question”: Today host Deb Knight grills Deputy PM over drought plan

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack was grilled by Today host Deb Knight who demanded that he answer a “pretty simple question” about the government’s drought relief package.

According to the $1 billion plan, the Regional Investment Corporation (RIC) farm drought loans of up to $500,000 will now be interest-free for two years, interest-only in years three to five and principal-and-interest for years six to 10.

This differs from the current conditions as they are interest-only for the first five years and principal and interest for the remainder of the 10-year loan term.

The loans will be available to small businesses who are dependent on agriculture and under similar conditions to the new drought loans. The loans cover businesses such as harvesting and shearing contractors, livestock transport providers, stock and station agents as well as agricultural equipment and repair providers that employ 19 workers or less.

“Should they wish to take a loan out, interest free over two years, they can do that up to half a million dollars,” the Nationals leader said on Today.

“Many drought-affected regional businesses, and that’s what I’ve been hearing, it’s not farmers, it’s about ag-related businesses, they can take out that loan under the RIC. They can invest in themselves in their futures, should they so wish and they don’t have to pay any interest for two years.”

“Whether it’s councils, whether it’s regional businesses or whether it’s farmers, we’ve provided the assistance that they’ve asked for.” @M_McCormackMP on the billion-dollar funding package being given to drought-stricken farmers and regional communities. #9Today pic.twitter.com/KQlR0lJy9r
— The Today Show (@TheTodayShow) 6 November 2019

However, Knight pointed out that it would take a lot longer than two years for many farmers and businesses to get back on their feet.

“Will you look at extending it beyond two years for those who need it?” she said.

“We will see about that,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.

“We have been monitoring the drought very closely. We have got people who live in these drought-affected communities. I live in a drought-affected community. I hear it every day, I report back as does the Drought Minister.”

Knight then asked why he couldn’t commit to making it available.

“What we have been doing with this drought is making a stepped payment and stepped packages all the way through,” Mr McCormack said.

Knight said, “It’s a pretty simple question. Will it be available? Yes or no?”

Mr McCormack replied, “The fact is we are making it available.”

Knight asked, “Beyond two years?”

Mr McCormack said, “We will see if it’s required beyond two years. If it’s required beyond two years. If it’s required beyond two years, well, of course, as a responsible government, as a government with the drought very much in mind, of course we will continue assistance. That’s what we do. That’s what we have done the whole way through. We have always monitored this drought and provided the assistance the whole way through as it’s been needed, as it’s been asked for.”

Knight pointed out that the drought measures in place did not include “exit packages” that have been requested by the National Farmers Federation to help farmers get off the land.

“It’s not — there are things that we will continue to look at,” Mr McCormack said.

“We want our farmers to stay on the land. Importantly, we want there to be a future in agriculture. Agriculture is not broken, by no means whatsoever. Agriculture still has a huge part to play food security in our nation is one of our most important things. We will continue to make sure that that food security is there. We will continue to make sure our farmers have incentive to stay on the land, to do the job they have always done for our nation.”

Under the plan unveiled by Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Thursday, millions of dollars will be released to local councils for job-creation projects to help out drought-affected farmers.

“Stuff the lot of them!”: Karl Stefanovic's harsh words

Former Today host Karl Stefanovic has defended his Channel 9 colleague Deborah Knight after she revealed that she spends part of everyday “just dealing with trolls”.

Knight was being interviewed by Stefanovic on radio station 2GB when she revealed just how bad the trolls are.

“I don’t want to beat up the impact that the trolls are having on me because I’m a tough cookie and I’m in the public eye,” she started off.

“I’ve got to work to make a living and I shouldn’t have to apologise for that. I’m flabbergasted that working hard is something that is considered a negative.

“Mummy guilt is a vicious thing. I beat myself up about it enough as it is. I’d love to spend more time at home and not have to work to make a living.

“But since when did working hard to create a future for my kids become something to criticise?” she finished.

Stefanovic was in disbelief that his colleague had to deal with “mummy guilt”.

“I can’t believe you have to deal with this," Stefanovic told her. “You are an incredible broadcaster, a great mum and a good person. Stuff the lot of them.”

View this post on Instagram

Rare to have the TV face on for radio.. in the chair for @steveprice7571 on @2gb873 and @newstalk4bc

A post shared by Deborah Knight (@deborah_knight) on Jul 28, 2019 at 7:06pm PDT

Stefanovic said he had also felt the wrath of Facebook and Twitter trolls.

“Sometimes it can get you at the wrong time of day, or you’re having a tough week and you take real offence to it,” he said on 2GB.

“There are people out there who aren’t used to it who are really going to be bullied.

“They’re called keyboard warriors, but I like to refer to them as keyboard cowards.”

Knight agreed.

“People who hide behind the keyboard need to lay off the pile on mentality. It’s so boring.”

WSFM breakfast host and Channel 10 personality Amanda Keller came to Knight’s defence as well and said that she had been “triggered” by online abuse.

“I get defensive when people say to me, ‘God, could you be any busier?’ or ‘When are you ever at home?’ because they’ve seen me on a show that was recorded in the middle of the day, two months ago,” she said on WSFM’s Jonsey and Amanda show yesterday morning.

Today star Deborah Knight's gruelling work schedule

Deborah Knight is across television screens seven days a week right now – both morning and night – due to her current hectic schedule.

The Today co-host is on TV from 5:30 am weekdays and pumps out three-and-a-half hours of high-pressure live television.

On top of that intensive workload, Knight is also the anchors of Nine’s 6 pm evening news bulletin on Saturday and Sunday nights, but also fills in for Peter Overton, the weekday host of Nine's 6 pm news bulletin, when he is on leave.

And, Overton has been on leave this week, so Knight has had to step in.

Knight will be clocking off tonight for a well-earned break for two whole days. However, that means that this week alone, she will have done more than 22 hours of live broadcast presenting. Those are very high numbers.

Others in the industry are raising their eyebrows at Knight’s hectic work schedule, as the mum-of-two is waking up at 3 am each day for Today and then back on TV at night for the 6 pm news.

“I’m exhausted just thinking about it,” one on-air personality at a rival network told news.com.au.

“Not many people come to mind when I try to imagine someone else so willingly putting in those hours. Live TV is gruelling stuff. She’s a gun.”

Media consultant Steve Allen believes that Knight’s constant appearance on Channel Nine is part of a larger plan to aid the failing Today brand by luring some of the evening news bulletin audience to the breakfast show.

“It’s a very clever strategy and it should, over the midterm, produce some ratings dividends. Today certainly needs it,” Allen said.

“It brings Nine back to where many think it should be, as the professional and slightly more up-market home of news. They’re positioning themselves as more trusted and more serious than that mums-and-dads show called Sunrise.”

TV Tonight editor David Knox agrees.

“When Deb was given the plum job of anchoring Today with Georgie Gardner, Nine indicated she would no longer be fronting prime time news bulletins in Sydney,” Knox said.

“But clearly, they recognise she is one of their most versatile presenters, whether holding her own in political interviews or never missing a beat when the news autocue goes down.

“Knight has survived TV’s revolving door where many others would not. Whether on Nine or Ten, viewers have always rated her, possibly more than some TV execs.”

Allen says that her hectic work schedule at the moment is due to her being “more humble” than many in the television industry.

“She doesn’t have any side to her, you know. She’s a lot more humble than many in TV and I think the public sees that. That’s why they really relate to her,” he said.

“If Nine is doing tracking research, which I imagine they are, she’s bound to be coming out as someone who viewers like.”

Nine has kept quiet about their new strategy, but it will be interesting to see whether or not viewers will follow Knight from the nightly news to the breakfast morning show.

“How ridiculous”: Pauline Hanson and Today show panned over "shameful" Uluru debate

In three months, the hour-long hike up Uluru will be closed, but the decision has stirred up debate around the nation as the closure of the hike draws closer.

One Nation’s Pauline Hanson and 2GB radio DJ and regular The Project panellist Steve Price appeared on Today this morning to discuss why the rock should stay open to climbers.

Despite traditional owners of the land being horrified as tourists flock to Uluru to climb it before the closure, Price and Hanson shared their thoughts during the all-white panel debate.

“The Australian taxpayers put in millions, hundreds of millions of dollars into it and they’re wanting another $27.5 million to upgrade the airport there for the resort,” Hanson said.

“Now the resort has only returned $19 million to the taxpayers only just recently. It employs over 400 people there, 38 per cent are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

“The fact is, it’s money-making. It’s giving jobs to indigenous communities, and you’ve got thousands of tourists who go there every year and want to climb the rock,” Hanson finished.

Price agreed.

“What we should be doing is assisting the local indigenous population to make this a growing tourism concern. We’ve seen, apparently, a huge spike in people that want to climb it since the announcement it’s going to close in October. So that shows there’s a hunger for tourists to do it,” he said.

“If it’s well managed Deb [Knight], I don’t have an issue with it. We need to sit down with them and explain this could be a positive for them.”

However, disgruntled fans were quick to criticise the segment on social media, pointing out that Price and Hanson, both Caucasian Australians, were debating the sensitivge topic with Today’s Knight, who is also a Caucasian Australian.

.@StevePriceMedia weighs in on the "silent scandal" affecting 1 in 3 elderly Australians. #9Today pic.twitter.com/H40Uuy2o3v
— The Today Show (@TheTodayShow) July 14, 2019

“I can only conclude that the reason the Today Show continues to provide Pauline Hanson with a platform is because they endorse her putrid, racist bile and want to ensure it gets wide coverage,” one user wrote.

“Let's talk Uluru climbing with… Pauline Hanson and Steve Price. Couldn't they find anyone whiter?,” another comment read.

The decision to have three white Australians discussing the issue without seeking the opinions of members of the Indigenous community was deemed insensitive.

"Omitting that factual dimension of the story is not reporting, its participation in a pantomime," one person wrote.

More than five hours after the initial debate, Today included a second segment where Indigenous entertainment reporter Brooke Boney weighed in on the discussion.

“This is about indigenous people having some sort of say over what happens on their land and their sacred sites,” she said.

“The thing about the rock is that it is so sacred to them that every time someone gets injured, hurt or has to be airlifted out it hurts them, and they say their ancestors mourn the loss of those people," Boney commented.

“They're not doing it to be nasty or protective, they're doing it to protect others because it is really dangerous.”

Yawuru woman Shannan Dodson, who works as an Indigenous Affairs Adviser for Media Diversity Australia, told news.com.au that Uluru should have the same significance as any other of the world’s sacred sites.

“The issue around climbing Uluru is that it is a sacred place and at the end of the day, when you see how much the world rallied around the destruction of Notre Dame and how significant that is, people understand there are sacred places based around culture and religion,” she said.

“The fact you can’t then translate that to Uluru having the same significance is undermining.

“For me, it feels like Western cultures and values are always elevated above other cultures and values. It’s saying Aboriginal cultures and values are less important. It’s just a thinking that we’re less than them and that our culture and values don’t matter.”
